I often meet people in my dreams, most of them I’ve never met in real life. And afterwards I’m left with the most peculiar thoughts.
I wonder if we all already know each other. I wonder if we long to meet physically. And in this longing, perhaps we seek one another out on the astral plane. But regardless, dreams are quite symbolic.
I had a dream once where I was tossing cards, and each time it was a Jack of Hearts.
The deck was stacked with Jacks. And I've thought about this for a long while. What could it mean, why so many of these Jacks? But then I was left with another thought—who was the person who handed me the deck?
The people we meet in our dreams can often teach us a lesson. They may also represent a part of ourselves.
In Hinduism, a core teaching is to recognize the God in everyone. A practice marked by the expression “Namaste” upon greeting a person. And in Buddhism, some schools teach that recognizing the beauty and conflict in one person is the same as recognizing these facets in yourself. Essentially, looking at one another, we are looking at other expressions of our own self—other perspectives of awareness.
“All that we see or seem is but a dream within a dream.”
― Edgar Allan Poe
No matter what you believe, paying attention to the figures in your dreams can be truly insightful. This can offer a teaching moment—a gentle shadow that can guide you further into self-discovery.
Maybe the mental projection of your grandfather symbolizes a level of strength and wisdom that you wish to attain. Or perhaps a dream of an old neighbor suggests that you wish you had the qualities of a particular friendship in your life.
Even dreams of cavorting with celebrities hold meaning and wonder—and I truly believe that no one can interpret the meaning for us. This has to come from within—from our own intuition.
Take care to note what you dream, and the people you dream about. This could be the lesson you’ve been waiting for… or the meeting you’ve been longing for.
Happy Friday and Happy Dreaming.
